What We Do
Exquisite, naturalistic, stylized. Historic, contemporary, eclectic. Public, commercial, residential. KenCairn Landscape Architecture does it all, with an eye to form, function and style.
We have extensive experience in the development of steep sites, wetlands, riparian restoration, and the creation of riparian habitat. We honor the natural world, while being willing to enhance it by blending its natural potential with the needs of its users.
KLA also does full-service planning coordination from simple lot-line adjustments to complex mixed-use project development.
Our specialty is getting IT right: creating the design, finding the right people to build it, and overseeing the process to ensure that the result adheres to the highest standards of quality.
"It’s hard to pinpoint the most impressive aspect of Kerry’s design here. Kerry’s design respects the lines and style of the house beautifully as well as the function we wanted from our outdoor spaces. For this project, we did something that we would not generally consider doing. The yard project was done by remote control with us in Houston and Kerry serving as designer and as the general contractor. All of this worked out perfectly, and we were always comfortable with Kerry making decisions on our behalf."

"Through my work, I have had theprivilege of working with some of the finest “big name” architects and firms in the world, including Philip Johnson and John Burgee; Gene Kohn and Bill Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox; Cesar Pelli; David Childs of SOM; and Robert Stern of Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
I mention this, for what it is worth, because working with architects and the entire design team, including structural and MEP engineers, landscape architects and others, is something that I spend a lot of time doing professionally.... We did an extensive amount of landscape work—both “hard-scaping” (i.e., walls, patios, brickwork, and a pool) and planting. Kerry was responsible for the design of everything on the exterior.
In our opinion, we think that Kerry did a truly brilliant job of using walls of various heights to create several different terrace levels in our side yard—also creating the feeling of several distinct outdoor “rooms”—with the overall effect of making it feel as though it is a level yard, despite the 7-foot grade change. We are delighted with the results of every aspect of the design work that Kerry did for us, including the pool, the terrace areas, the retaining walls, the fence and, of course, the landscape design itself."
